Polycarp, Letter to the Philippians

Editors' preface

PG 5:1005
Of the holy Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna and hieromartyr, letter to the Philippians
Polycarp and the presbyters who are with him, to the Church of God that sojourns at Philippi: mercy to you and peace from God almighty and [from the] Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour be multiplied.
[1] I rejoiced greatly with you in our Lord Jesus Christ, that you received the likenesses of true love, and escorted on their way, as was fitting for you, those enfolded in the saint-befitting bonds, which are the diadems of those truly chosen by God and our Lord; and that the firm root of your faith, proclaimed from ancient times, abides until now, and bears fruit unto our Lord Jesus Christ, Who endured for our sins to come even unto death, « Whom God raised, having loosed the pangs of Hades. In Whom, not having seen [Him], you believe, and believing you exult with joy unspeakable and glorified; » into which [joy] many desire to enter, knowing that « by grace you are saved, not of works, » but by the will of God, through Jesus Christ.
[2] « Wherefore, having girded up your loins, serve God in fear » and truth, having forsaken the empty vain-talking and the error of the many, « having believed in Him Who raised our

PG 5:1008
Lord Jesus Christ from the dead, and gave Him glory » and a throne at His right hand; to Whom all things in heaven and on earth were made subject; Whom every breath serves; Who comes as judge of the living and the dead; Whose blood God will require of those who disobey Him. And He Who raised Him from the dead will raise us also, if we do His will, and walk in His commandments, and love what He loved, abstaining from all unrighteousness, covetousness, love of money, slander, false witness; « not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing, » or blow for blow, or curse for curse; but remembering what the Lord said, teaching: « Judge not, that you be not judged; forgive, and it shall be forgiven you; be merciful, that you may obtain mercy; with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again; » and that « Blessed are the poor and those persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of God. »
[3] These things, brethren, I write to you concerning righteousness not because I took it upon myself, but because you yourselves called upon me first. For neither I, nor another like me, is able to follow after the wisdom of the blessed and glorious Paul; who, having been among you, in the presence of the men of that time taught accurately and firmly the word concerning truth; who also, when absent, wrote you letters, into which, if you look closely, you will be able to be built up into the faith that was given to you, « which is the mother of us all, » with hope following after and love going before — [the love] towards God and Christ and towards the neighbour. For if anyone is within these, he has fulfilled the commandment of righteousness; for he who has love is far from all sin.
[4] « But the beginning of all troubles is the love of money. » Knowing therefore that « we brought nothing into the world, neither have we anything to carry out, » let us arm ourselves with the arms of righteousness, and let us teach ourselves first to walk in the commandment of the Lord; and then also

Schriften I, 21) videtur suspicari, τῷ πνεύματι apud S. Matthaeum assumentum esse recentioris aevi, neutiquam assentiri possum. ID.

Smith and Ruchat add, from the old interpreter and from St Matthew 5:3, τῷ πνεύματι (after πτωχοί), a word which St Luke 6:20 indeed omits. But what prevents the holy Father from having had the parallel passage of St Luke in mind? With Credner, who (Beiträge zur Einleitung in die bibl. Schriften I, 21) seems to suspect that τῷ πνεύματι in St Matthew is an addition of a later age, I can in no way agree. The same.

PG 5:1009
[let us teach] your wives [to walk] in the faith given to them and in love and in purity, cherishing their own husbands in all truth, and loving all alike in all self-control, and to instruct their children with the instruction of the fear of God; the widows, to be sober-minded concerning the faith of the Lord, interceding unceasingly concerning all, keeping far from all slander, evil speaking, false witness, love of money, and every evil; knowing that they are an altar of God, and that all things are inspected for blemish, and that nothing escapes Him, neither of reasonings nor of thoughts, nor any of the hidden things of the heart.
[5] Knowing therefore that « God is not mocked, » we ought to walk worthily of His commandment and of His glory. Likewise deacons [are to be] blameless before His righteousness, as deacons of God and of Christ and not of men: not slanderers, not double-tongued, not lovers of money, self-controlled in all things, compassionate, diligent, walking according to the truth of the Lord, Who became minister of all; to Whom, if we are well-pleasing in the present age, we shall receive also the [age] to come, even as He promised us to raise us from the dead, and [promised] that, if we conduct ourselves worthily of Him, « we shall also reign with » Him — if indeed we believe.
Likewise also [let the] younger men be blameless in all things, taking thought for purity before everything, and bridling themselves away from every evil. For it is good to be cut off from the lusts that are in the world, because every « lust wars against the spirit; » and « neither fornicators, nor the effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with men shall inherit the kingdom of God, » nor those who do what is unseemly. Wherefore it is needful to abstain from all these things, being subject to the presbyters and deacons as to God and Christ; [and for] the virgins to walk in a blameless and pure conscience.
[6] And let the presbyters also be tender-hearted, merciful towards all, turning back those that have strayed, visiting all the sick, not neglecting widow, or orphan, or poor man; but « providing always for what is good in the sight of God and of men, » abstaining from all anger, respect of persons, unjust

judgement; being far from all love of money; not quick to believe [anything] against anyone; not severe in judgement, knowing that we are all debtors of sin. If then we beseech the Lord that He forgive us, we ought also ourselves to forgive; for we stand before the eyes of the Lord and God, and « all must stand before the judgement-seat of Christ, and each give account for himself. » So then let us serve Him with fear and all reverence, as He Himself commanded, and the apostles who preached the gospel to us, and the prophets who proclaimed beforehand the coming of our Lord; being zealous for what is good, abstaining from stumbling-blocks and from false brethren and from those who bear the name of the Lord in hypocrisy, who lead empty men astray.
[7] « For everyone who does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is Antichrist; » and whoever does not confess the testimony of the cross is of the devil; and whoever craftily twists the Oracles of the Lord to his own desires, and says that there is neither resurrection nor judgement, this man is the first-born of Satan. Wherefore, forsaking the vanity of the many and [their] false teachings, let us turn back to the word handed down to us from the beginning, « being sober unto prayers, » and persevering in fastings, beseeching the all-seeing God with supplications « not to lead us into temptation, » even as the Lord said: « The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. »
[8] Unceasingly therefore let us persevere in our hope and in the pledge of our righteousness, which is Christ Jesus, « Who bore our sins in His own body upon the tree, Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth; » but for our sake, that we might live in Him, He endured all things. Let us therefore become imitators of His endurance; and if we suffer for His name, let us glorify Him. For this example He set before us in His own person, and this we have believed.

word of righteousness and to practise all endurance, which you also saw before your eyes, not only in the blessed Ignatius and Zosimus and Rufus, but also in others who were from among you, and in Paul himself and the rest of the apostles; being persuaded that all these ran not in vain, but in faith and righteousness, and that they are in the place due to them beside the Lord, with Whom they also suffered. For they did not love the present age, but Him Who died on our behalf and for our sake was raised up by ⟦God⟧.
[10] In his ergo state, et Domini exemplar sequimini, firmi in fide et immutabiles, fraternitatis amatores, diligentes invicem, in veritate sociati, mansuetudinem Domini alterutri praestantes, nullum despicientes.
[10] Stand fast, therefore, in these things, and follow the pattern of the Lord, firm in the faith and unchangeable, lovers of the brotherhood, loving one another, united in the truth, showing the gentleness of the Lord to one another, despising no one. When you are able to do good, do not put it off, because « almsgiving delivers from death. » Be all of you subject to one another, « having your conduct blameless among the Gentiles, » so that from your good works you yourselves may receive praise, and the Lord may not be blasphemed in you. But woe to him through whom the name of the Lord is blasphemed. Teach sobriety, therefore, to all, and conduct yourselves in it as well.
« An nescimus, quia sancti mundum judicabunt? » sicut Paulus docet.
[11] I am greatly grieved for Valens, who was once made a presbyter among you, that he should so fail to understand the place that was given to him. I warn you, therefore, to abstain from avarice, and to be chaste and truthful. Abstain from every evil. But he who cannot govern himself in these things, how does he proclaim it to another? If anyone does not abstain from avarice, he will be defiled by idolatry, and will be judged as one among the Gentiles. And who are ignorant of the judgement of the Lord? « Do we not know that the saints will judge the world? » as Paul teaches. But I have perceived or heard no such thing among you, among whom the blessed Paul laboured, who are [praised] in the beginning of his letter. For he glories about you in all the Churches which alone at that time had known God; but we had not yet known Him. I am therefore very grieved, brethren, for him and for his wife; may the Lord grant them true repentance. Be sober, therefore, you also in this; « and do not regard such people as enemies, » but call them back as suffering and straying members, so that you may save the body of you all. For in doing this you build up yourselves.
[12] For I trust that you are well trained in the sacred Scriptures, and that nothing is hidden from you; but to me it is not granted at present. As it is said in these Scriptures: « Be angry and do not sin, » and: « Let not the sun go down […]

XI.

XI. I am grieved for Valens; guard yourselves against avarice.

XII. Ignoscite ei. Deus vobis virtutes tribuat. Orate pro omnibus, etiam pro inimicis.

XII. Forgive him. May God grant you the virtues. Pray for all, even for enemies.

super iracundiam vestram.
[…] upon your anger. » Blessed is he who remembers it; and I believe this is so with you. And may God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the eternal High Priest Himself, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, build you up in faith and truth, and in all gentleness, and without anger, and in patience and long-suffering and endurance and chastity; and may He give you a lot and portion among His saints, and to us with you, and to all who are under heaven, who shall believe in our Lord Jesus Christ and in His Father, Who « raised Him from the dead. » Pray for all the saints. Pray also for kings and powers and princes, and for those who persecute and hate you, and for the enemies of the cross, that your fruit may be manifest among all, that you may be perfect in Him.

[13] You wrote to me, both you and Ignatius, that if anyone is going away to Syria, he should carry your letters also; which I will do, if I find a fitting opportunity, either I myself or one whom I shall send to act as envoy on your behalf also. The letters of Ignatius that were sent to us by him, and others, as many as we had with us, we have sent to you, as you enjoined; they are subjoined to this letter; and from them you will be able to profit greatly. For they contain faith and endurance and all the edification that pertains to our Lord.

And concerning Ignatius himself, and those who are with him, make known to us whatever you have learned more certainly.

[14] I have written these things to you by Crescens, whom I have commended to you up to the present day, and now commend. For he has conducted himself blamelessly among us; and I believe likewise among you. And you will hold his sister commended, when she comes to you. Be kept safe in the Lord Jesus Christ. His votis se responsurum esse Polycarpus pollicetur.

That is, « Antioch. » Ignatius (ch. 7) had charged Polycarp to send a legate himself to the Church of Antioch on account of the restoration of peace, and (ch. 8) at the same time to hand to this legate letters of congratulation from the other Churches. Besides this charge of Ignatius, the Philippians too had themselves approached Polycarp with requests that he should hand their letter to his legate to be carried to the Antiochenes. Polycarp promises that he will answer these wishes.

VI.

X. In his ergo state, et Domini exemplar sequimini; firmi in fide et immutabiles, fraternitatis amatores, diligentes invicem, in veritate sociati, mansuetudinem Domini alterutri praestantes, nullum despicientes.

USSER.

In all the Churches which alone at that time had known God; but we had not yet known Him. By « we » Ussher understands Polycarp; I understand the Smyrnaeans. See ch. 3. COTELIER. — But we had not yet known Him. By these words he indicates that he was alive when Paul wrote his letters to the Churches, although he had not yet given his name to Christ. Since from that time he prolonged his life right up to the year of Christ 169, in which he underwent martyrdom, he must have been of a very great age, about which we have spoken in the Preface prefixed to the Letter of the Smyrnaeans on his death. Ubi tamen et nostrum hunc Polycarpi et Eusebii interpretem Rufinum deceptum fuisse apparet, de litteris ad Philippenses deferendis ista accipientem, cum ad Antiochenos dandae litterae intelligantur; vel ab ipsis Philippensibus, si παρ' ὑμῶν, vel a Polycarpo et Smyrnaeis suis, si παρ' ἡμῶν hic legendum fuerit; quod posterius ex Ignatii verbis illis, in Epistola ad Smyrnaeos, firmamentum accipit: Ὃ ἐφάνη μοι ἄξιον, τοῦτό ἐστιν, ὥστε πέμψαι τινὰ τῶν ὑμετέρων μετ' ἐπιστολῆς, ἵνα συνδοξάσῃ τὴν κατὰ Θεὸν αὐτοῖς γενομένην εὐδίαν.

For ὑμῶν, ἡμῶν is read in Nicephorus and in some copies of Eusebius, which Rufinus too seems to have followed when he rendered « let him carry the letters to you, » and the old interpreter of Polycarp when he translated: « Let him carry my letters, which I shall have made to you; » for that is how he meant to express ὅπερ ποιήσω; and Jacques Lefèvre, not noticing this, substituted here « which I shall also have given to you, » against the witness of the manuscripts. Here, however, it appears that both this interpreter of Polycarp of ours and Rufinus, the interpreter of Eusebius, were misled, taking these words of letters to be carried to the Philippians, whereas letters to be delivered to the Antiochenes are meant: either from the Philippians themselves, if παρ' ὑμῶν, or from Polycarp and his Smyrnaeans, if παρ' ἡμῶν is to be read here; the latter is confirmed by those words of Ignatius in the Letter to the Smyrnaeans: Ὃ ἐφάνη μοι ἄξιον, τοῦτό ἐστιν, ὥστε πέμψαι τινὰ τῶν ὑμετέρων μετ' ἐπιστολῆς, ἵνα συνδοξάσῃ τὴν κατὰ Θεὸν αὐτοῖς γενομένην εὐδίαν. « What has seemed to me worth doing is this: that you should send one of your number with a Letter (namely to the Antiochenes in Syria), so that together with them he may glorify God for the calm which they have obtained in God. » USSHER.

« An nescimus, quia sancti mundum judicabunt? » sicut Paulus docet.

So Eusebius, Nicephorus and the anonymous Greek writer of the Acts of Ignatius cite this passage; Baronius too acknowledges this to be the genuine reading, for which the old Latin interpreter of Polycarp here has: « The letters of Ignatius, which were sent to you by him, » where we have restored « ab eo » (answering to the Greek ὑπ' αὐτοῦ) from the copy of Magdalen College; other codices changed it into « habeo. » THE SAME.

Ignatii descriptor legit ὠφεληθήσεσθε, quomodo et vetus Polycarpi interpres reddidit: « Ex quibus magnus vobis erit profectus. » ID.

See our dissertation on the writings of Ignatius and Polycarp, ch. 2. But in what follows, Ἐξ ὧν μεγάλα ὠφεληθῆναι δυνήσεσθε, the anonymous writer of the martyrdom of Blessed Ignatius reads ὠφεληθήσεσθε, as the old interpreter of Polycarp also rendered it: « From which great profit will come to you. » THE SAME.

(11) ‹anchor: Et de ipso Ignatio› (the closing line of the Antiqua versio, printed full width) · printed under col 1022

» Haec ille. In Latino vero codice D. Alexandri Petavii, tota Epistola ita concluditur: « Incolumes estote in Domino Jesu Christo, et gratia ipsius cum omnibus vobis. » ID.

Et de ipso Ignatio, etc. Photius mentions this in his Bibliotheca, treating of this Letter of Polycarp to the Philippians: « He says that he has also sent them the letters of Ignatius Theophorus, and he asks to be informed by them if they have heard anything about him. » In Halloix's edition, however, these words are omitted; they show that this letter was written by Polycarp about the year of the Lord 106, namely at the same time as Ignatius was led away from Syria to Rome for martyrdom; « a letter, » says the same Halloix, « in which, since the colour and features with which Irenaeus, Eusebius and Photius describe it are found, it cannot be doubted that it is the genuine work of the martyr himself. For the form of his faith and the preaching of the truth (which Irenaeus observes can be learned from it) shine out clearly in it; and the testimonies which Eusebius tells us are quoted there from the first Letter of Peter appear in great number; and frequent admonitions, with clarity and simplicity of speech after the ecclesiastical manner of interpretation (in which Photius declares that it abounds), present and show themselves everywhere: so that hardly anything more could be wished for its full recognition. » So he. In the Latin codex of Master Alexandre Petau, however, the whole Letter ends thus: « Farewell in the Lord Jesus Christ, and His grace be with you all. » THE SAME.
