EPISTOLA LXXXIV.
LETTER LXXXIV.
AD PULCHERIAM AUGUSTAM.
TO PULCHERIA AUGUSTA.
LEO episcopus PULCHERIAE Augustae.
LEO, bishop, TO PULCHERIA Augusta.
CAP.
CHAP. I. — The religious solicitude of your piety, with which, God inspiring you, you are wont to console the whole world, I venture to urge on with more frequent addresses, so that the necessary completion may follow upon the progress of your works; and that, just as we rejoice over the state of the Church of Constantinople, whose bishop and people alike are known now to hold the faith of catholic purity, so also the confession of others concerning the incarnation of the Word may be in concord with us. Hence, as I had indicated in another letter that I would do, I have made haste to send my brothers Lucentius the bishop and Basil the presbyter, who, joined by the devotion of my brother Anatolius, are to carry out my arrangements according to the rules which they have received, most glorious Augusta. For, as has been made known by the letter of the aforesaid bishop and the report of his clerics, there are many things that must be treated more indulgently, and many that must more justly be restrained: so that in a case of such great disturbance strictness may not be too harsh nor leniency too incautious; since one thing is due to those who make satisfaction, another to the obstinate.
CAP. II.
CHAP. II. — There is offered to your piety, therefore, worthy matter, in which to exercise the care of a holy heart that is pleasing to the Lord, and to multiply the crowns of former merits by the abolition of the present error as well. For as the Nestorian impiety, so also the Eutychian blasphemy is to be banished from the fellowship of all catholics. For it is as impious to deny that the Godhead of the Son, co-eternal and consubstantial with the Father, was also brought forth by bodily birth from the womb of the Virgin mother, as to affirm that there is one nature in the Son of God after the mystery of the incarnation: so that, forsooth, either His humanity or His Godhead is rejected; whereas by the union of both […]

[…] essences neither has the one been changed into the other, nor the assumed [nature] brought to an end in the one assuming it; but both the unchangeableness of the Word and the reality of the flesh and of the soul remain inseparably in the unity of the person. Those who do not believe this, though the law bears witness, the patriarchs believe, the prophets announce, the Gospel preaches, the apostles teach, and the whole world confesses, are outside the mystery of the body of Christ, outside the unity of the Christian name.
CAP. III. Data V idus Junii, Adelfio viro clarissimo consule.
CHAP. III. — As we grieve over the ruin of these men, so we detest their perfidy. But so that a sincere judgement may everywhere be kept regarding the persons of such men, and one thing be rendered to the corrected, another to the obstinate, may your piety deign to cherish our [envoys], who have been sent from the apostolic see, and aid all the actions which we have enjoined on them; so that the more quickly and easily, with the Lord's help, they may carry out the things that serve your glory and the peace of the whole Church. Concerning Eutyches, moreover, the author of the whole scandal and depravity, let your clemency order this: that he be moved further away from that place which is too near to the city of Constantinople, lest he enjoy the too frequent consolations of those whom he has drawn into his impiety. Order also that a catholic abbot be set over his monastery, over which he presided ruinously and unworthily, one who can both free that congregation of the servants of God from the depraved doctrine and imbue it with the teachings of the truth. Given on the fifth day before the Ides of June, Adelfius, a man of clarissimus rank, being consul.

[…] or sluggishly; since, with you sitting [in council], you on whom we have enjoined the execution of our arrangement, all these things can be conducted with such moderation that neither the claims of kindness nor those of justice are neglected, but the judgement of God is kept in mind in all things without respect of persons. And that this may be kept with right observance, let the integrity of the catholic faith first of all be preserved; and since in all things narrow and steep is the way which leads to life (Matt. 7:14), let there be no turning aside from its path either to the left or to the right.
And since the evangelical and apostolic faith overcomes all errors, and on one side casts down Nestorius, on the other crushes Eutyches and his partners, remember that this rule is to be kept: whoever grieve, as we have learned from the report of your Love, that in that synod, which will neither be able to have the name of a synod nor deserves it, and in which Dioscorus displayed his malevolence and Juvenal his ignorance, they could be driven, overcome by fear and overpowered by terror, to consent to a most wicked judgement, and who desire to obtain catholic communion, to their satisfaction let fraternal peace be granted; on condition that, in no doubtful professions, they condemn Eutyches with his dogma and with his associates by the execration of anathema.
CAP. II.
Chap. II. — But concerning those who sinned more gravely in this cause, and for this reason claimed for themselves a higher place in that same unhappy synod, so as to weigh down the simplicity of humbler brethren with the prejudgements of their arrogance: if perchance they come to their senses and, ceasing from the defence of their deed, turn to the condemnation of their own error, and if such satisfaction comes from them as does not seem fit to be refused, let it be reserved for the riper counsels of the apostolic see, so that, when all things have been examined and weighed, what ought to be decided concerning their actions themselves […]

Vat. Isid. Ratramnus, Sichardus aliique nostri veteres libri, exceptis duobus collect. 21, qui omittunt vobis. Quesnellus, residentibus his, ex cod. Grimanico. Notat porro idem Quesnellus in marginali postilla, improbans nostram lectionem, residentibus vobis, his verbis: « Quasi Leo dispositionis suae executionem episcopo Constantinopolitano injunxisset Romanus.

So [read], with the earlier printed editions, the Ratisbon codex, both Hispana [codices], Vat. Isid., Ratramnus, Sichard and our other old books, except two of collection 21, which omit vobis. Quesnel [reads] residentibus his, from the Grimani codex. He also cites the Trecopith. [codex] and two Thuanei, of which two are of collection 5. But this letter is not found in that collection; and if it does exist in those two codices, it is certainly an addition which does not belong to that collection: hence it nowhere appears in the table of the Thuaneus itself published by the same Quesnel, which lists all the documents of that collection. The same Quesnel further notes in a marginal gloss, disapproving our reading residentibus vobis, in these words: « As if Leo, the Roman, had enjoined the execution of his arrangement on the bishop of Constantinople. » But that Anatolius was delegated in this matter, or specially joined to the legates, is shown by the words set down a little before, quibus tua dilectio societur ("with whom your Love is to be associated"); and in ep. 83, c. 2: Injunctum est ab apostolica sede directis, ut in consortium suae deliberationis adscito Constantinopolitanae urbis antistite, etc. ("It has been enjoined on those sent by the apostolic see that, having taken the bishop of the city of Constantinople into partnership in their deliberation", etc.). And that the execution of the pontiff's arrangement was enjoined on the same man is shown by what follows in chapter three: Annitere itaque, ut..... fideliter et efficaciter... exsequaris ("Strive therefore ... to carry out faithfully and effectively"). A little after, in Ratramnus and in three codd.: ea possint agi cuncta cum moderatione.

[…] ought to be decided may be judged. And let the name of none of such men be recited at the altar in the Church over which the Lord has willed you to preside, as we have already written before, until the course of events shows what ought to be decided about them.
CAP. III. De commonitorio vero, a clericis dilectionis tuae nobis oblato, necessarium non fuit epistolis quid videretur inserere cum sufficeret legatis cuncta committi, quorum sermone ex omnibus diligentius instrueris.
Chap. III. As to the memorandum, however, presented to us by the clerics of your Love, it was not necessary to insert in letters what we thought, since it sufficed to entrust everything to the legates, by whose speech you will be more carefully instructed on all points.
Data v idus Junii, Adelfio viro clarissimo consule.
Strive therefore, dearest brother, to carry out faithfully and effectively, together with these brethren whom we have chosen as fit agents in so great a matter, the things that befit the Church of God; especially since the very nature of the cause and the hope of divine help urge you on, and the faith of the most clement princes is so holy and their devotion so religious that we find in them not only a Christian but even a priestly disposition. They, assuredly, in keeping with the piety by which they glory in being servants of God, will graciously receive all your suggestions that will profit the catholic faith, so that by their work too both Christian peace may be restored and impious error abolished. And if anything should need further deliberation concerning any persons, let a report be sent to us quickly, so that, when the nature of the cases has been thoroughly examined, our solicitude may decide what ought to be observed. Given on the fifth day before the Ides of June, in the consulship of Adelfius, a man most illustrious.

[…] to receive, so fitting is it that our writings too be conveyed to you, especially since we do this not only for the sake of our common friendship, but much more for the state of the universal Church.
Data v idus Junii, Adelfio viro clarissimo consule.
Therefore, through our brethren Lucentius the bishop and Basil the presbyter, whom we had indicated we would send to Constantinople, I render the conversation I owe, urging that you deign to join the zeal of your diligence to theirs in all things, so that the remnants of the scandals, if any still remain, may be shrewdly removed. For although the light of the catholic faith now shines forth everywhere, and, what is strongest of all, the hearts of the Christian princes are in service to the divine authorities, yet there are some things which that Ephesine whirlwind so threw into confusion that one must act with great restraint, lest the evils of the dissensions which arose from it should persist. What, then, has been enjoined upon and entrusted to our legates, you will learn from their own account; and you will show both to me and to them such affection that whatever has been committed to them, joined with the zeal and solicitude of your Love, may, with the Lord's help, reach the result we desire. Given on the fifth day before the Ides of June, in the consulship of Adelfius, a man most illustrious.
