Veronen. 57. Notavit hoc loco Baluzius in mss. Corb. et Divion. legi, ex vestem, χρυσῆν σειρὰν, praecepto.

From the Greek: chain. Just after, the printed editions: from the garment of Christ and the precept of the lawgiver. We have struck out the words veste Christi et [the garment of Christ and], wrongly inserted and foreign to the Greek original, on the authority of the excellent Verona manuscript 57. Baluze noted at this place that in the Corbie and Dijon manuscripts one reads ex vestem, χρυσῆν σειρὰν [a golden chain], praecepto. From this he thinks arose the error of other copyists or editors, because they did not notice that these were Greek words, which correspond to the words auro textam seriem [a series woven of gold].

Vox fideles deest in duobus codd. Baluzii, et in nostro Chigiano, qui integram editionem Rustici continent. At legitur in Veronen.

The word fideles [faithful] is lacking in two of Baluze's manuscripts and in our Chigi one, which contain the complete edition of Rusticus. But it is read in Verona 57 and Vatican 1323, which are sound manuscripts of Rusticus, but pass over his notes, and in some other respects differ as to order. Just after, in place of ornandum [to adorn], which we have restored from the manuscripts and the editions before the Roman one, this [edition] and the following ones show ordinandum [to order].

Ancient version (Latin)

CAP. I. Repletum est gaudio os nostrum, et lingua nostra exsultatione (Psal. CXXV, 2). Hanc tamquam propriam nobis prophetiam gratia coaptavit, a quibus pietatis est restitutio confirmata. Quid enim fide sublimius ad laetandum? Quid agnitione Dominica festivius ad coronas, quam nobis olim Salvator ipse tradidit ad salutem, inquiens Euntes, docete omnes gentes, baptizantes eos in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus sancti; docentes eos servare omnia quaecumque mandavi vobis (Matth. XXVIII, 19, 20)? Quibus tu quidem, sicut membris caput, praeeras in his qui tuum tenebant ordinem benevolentiam praeferens. Imperatores vero fideles ad ornandum

PL 54:952
The holy and great and ecumenical synod, gathered by the grace of God and the decree of our most pious and Christ-loving emperors in the metropolis of the Chalcedonians, of the province of the Bithynians, to the most holy and most blessed archbishop of the Romans, Leo.
Our mouth was filled with joy, and our tongue with gladness: grace has fitted this prophecy to us as our own, by whom the achievement of piety has been confirmed. For what is higher than faith for gladness? What is brighter than the knowledge of the Lord for dancing, which the Saviour Himself handed on to us from above for salvation, saying: Go, make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.
This, like a golden chain let down to us by the command of Him who laid it down, you have guarded, being appointed for all as the interpreter of the voice of the blessed Peter, and drawing the blessedness of his faith upon all. Hence we too, using you for our benefit as the leader in the good, have shown the children of the Church the inheritance of the truth, not each of us privately giving his teaching in a corner, but with a common spirit, in one accord and harmony, making known the confession of the faith. And we were in a common chorus, delighting in spiritual dishes as at royal banquets, which Christ had prepared through your letter for those who feasted; and we seemed to see the heavenly Bridegroom dwelling among us. For if, where two or three are gathered in His name, He said that He is there in the midst of them, how great a closeness did He show towards five hundred and twenty priests, who set the knowledge of their confession of Him before both homeland and toil? Of these you, as the head of the members, were leader in those who held your place, showing your goodwill. And faithful emperors presided for good order, as Zerubbabel with Jesus, for the Church as for Jerusalem […]

Qui multa prius pessima operatus, supervidit priora sequentibus. Nam beatum illum inter sanctos Constantinopolis pastorem Flavianum, apostolicam proferentem fidem, et Deo amicissimum episcopum Eusebium, praeter omnem canonum consequentiam deposuit atque damnavit; et Eutychen pro impietate damnatum suae tyrannidis decretis innoxium statuit, et dignitatem quae a vestra illi ablata fuerat sanctitate (quippe ut ab eo qui hac gratia erat indignus) ille restituit, et in summa, sicut singularis ferus, in vineam irruens, quam optimam reperit plantationem, evertit (Ps. And the adversary would have been like a wild beast outside the fold, roaring by himself, having no one to seize, had not he who was formerly president of the Alexandrians thrown himself to him as prey; who, having earlier wrought many terrible deeds, hid the former under the later. For that blessed Flavian, [now] among the saints, the shepherd of Constantinople, who held forth the apostolic faith, and the most God-beloved bishop Eusebius, he deposed against the whole order of the canons; and Eutyches, condemned for impiety, he acquitted by the votes of his tyranny, and gave back to him the dignity that had been taken from him by Your Holiness, as from one unworthy of the grace; and like the solitary wild beast falling once upon the vine, the planting which he found finest he overturned, and that which had been cast out as fruitless he brought in; and those who were of a shepherd's mind he cut off, while the wolves, shown to be such, he set over the sheep;

and besides all these things he stretched out his madness even against him who had been entrusted by the Saviour with the guarding of the vine, we mean Your Holiness; and he contrived excommunication against the one who is zealous to unite the body of the Church. And when he ought to have repented of these things, ought to have begged for mercy with tears, he exulted as though over noble deeds, spitting upon the letter of Your Holiness and setting himself against all the doctrines of the truth. And it would indeed have been right for him to be left at once in the party in which he had placed himself. But since we profess the discipleship of the Saviour, Who wills all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth, we hastened to confirm this kindness towards him in deed; and we called him to judgement in a brotherly way, not as trying to cut him off, but giving him room for a defence, for healing. And we prayed that he might be shown to be better than those who had charged him with various accusations, so that, dissolving the assembly joyfully in our joy, we might in nothing be outwitted by Satan. But he, having the proof of his conscience written within himself, by declining the judgement assented to the accusations, and set aside the three lawful summonses made to him; therefore, for these reasons, [the sentence] which he himself against […]

The Roman editors, from the Greek, in the margin: granting him room so that we might heal; and we wished him to come out superior to those who accused him of various crimes: and they continue in the text: so that, dismissing the council with festive and crowded joy, we might in nothing be overcome by Satan. Up to this point the gloomy things stood for us, and at once the grace of good things shone forth; and having pulled up one tare, we filled the whole world with pure wheat, with delight; and as having received the power to root up and to plant, we narrowed the cutting-off down to one, but carefully rooted the fruitfulness of the good. For it was God Who was at work, and the victorious Euphemia, who crowned the assembly for the bridal chamber; she, receiving from us the definition of the faith as her own confession, brought it to her Bridegroom through the most pious emperor and the Christ-loving empress, calming all the tumult of the adversaries, and strengthening the confession of the truth as dear [to her], and ratifying it by hand and tongue with the votes of all, for a demonstration. These are the things which we have done with you, who were present in spirit, and resolved to give your approval as with brothers, and were all but seen through the wisdom of your representatives.

We make known also that we have defined certain other things for the good order of affairs and for the stability of the ecclesiastical ordinances, being persuaded that Your Holiness too, when informed, will both accept these things and confirm them. For the custom that has long prevailed, which the holy Church of God of the Constantinopolitans had, of ordaining the metropolitans of the dioceses of Asia and of Pontus and of Thrace, we have now ratified by a synodal vote as well, not so much granting anything to the throne of Constantinople as securing good order for the metropolises, because many disturbances often arise when the bishops die, the clergy and laity in them being without a leader and throwing the ecclesiastical order into confusion. This has not escaped Your Holiness either, especially on account of the Ephesians, since you have been troubled about them many times. And we confirmed also the canon of the hundred and fifty holy fathers who were gathered at Constantinople under Theodosius the Great of pious memory, which declares that after your most holy […]

From the Greek: on whose account you have often been troubled. The dispute over the bishopric of Ephesus between Bassianus and Stephen is indicated, which seems to have given occasion for pressing the prerogative of the see of Constantinople, and for the canon framed soon after on its behalf. From this passage we gather that in this dispute letters were often written to Leo before the synod of Chalcedon. For the most holy bishops Paschasinus and Lucentius, who hold the place of Your Holiness, and with them the most God-beloved presbyter Boniface, tried to speak vehemently against what was thus laid down, wishing, no doubt, that this good thing too should begin from your providence, so that, as with the faith, so too the achievement of good order might be credited to you. For we, deferring to the most pious and Christ-loving emperors, who take pleasure in this, and to the illustrious senate, and to the whole imperial city, so to speak, judged the confirmation of its honour by the ecumenical synod to be opportune; and, as though it had been begun by Your Holiness, through those whom you have always been zealous to cherish, we ratified it with confidence, knowing that every achievement accomplished by the children redounds to the fathers who own them. We beseech you, therefore: honour the judgement with your votes as well, and as we have brought our concord in good things to the head, so may the summit also make up for the children what is fitting. For so both the pious emperors will be deferred to, who have confirmed the judgement of Your Holiness as a law, and the throne of Constantinople will receive its recompense, having always fulfilled for you every zeal in the cause of piety, and having joined itself to you in zeal for concord. And that you may know that we have done nothing for favour or for enmity, but as governed by the divine will, we have made known to you the whole import of what was done, for the establishment of our own […]

We add θρόνον [throne], a word certainly necessary, from both Venetian manuscripts. In the printed editions only ἀποστολικὸν [apostolic]. In the margin of the Roman edition, however, is noted: perhaps θρόνον is lacking.

Ven. In vulg., †ἐλεῖν πεπεισμένοι.

These two words, δεύτερον τεταγμένον [ranked second], are not indeed necessary; but since the Latin translator read them, as appears from the words which has been ranked second, we too have therefore put them in, following the authority of both Venetian manuscripts. In the printed editions: †ἐλεῖν πεπεισμένοι.

3 ‹anchor: "καὶ ἐπὶ"› · printed under col 958 Mss. Ven. ambo, τὴν Κωνσταντινουπόλεως Ἐκκλησίαν.

Both Venetian manuscripts: τὴν Κωνσταντινουπόλεως Ἐκκλησίαν [the Church of Constantinople].

4 ‹anchor: "εὔκαιρον"› · printed under col 958 Mss. Ven. ambo ἐνομίσαμεν εἶναι τὴν, etc.

Both Venetian manuscripts: ἐνομίσαμεν εἶναι τὴν [we thought to be the], etc. A reading not to be despised, which the Latin translator too can plainly be inferred to have recognized, from his version, which here has we thought it to be opportune.

5 ‹anchor: "ἐπ' αὐτῇ"› · printed under col 958 Ita legendum ex mss. Ven. ambobus et Latina versione. In marg. quoque edit. Rom. annotatur, παρά. Lat. In vulg., περὶ τῆς, etc.

So it is to be read from both Venetian manuscripts and the Latin version. In the margin of the Roman edition too is noted: παρά [by], Lat[in]. In the printed editions: περὶ τῆς [concerning the], etc.

V Concilior edit. Editi, pro dispositionem, habebant depositionem.

The printed editions omit "vim", a word we have supplied from the Vatican manuscript. Pope Vigilius cites this passage from this version in the Constitutum, vol. V of the Councils, Venice edition, p. 1355, with this reading, which suggested another emendation: "We have taken care to make known to you the whole force of the proceedings, for our standing, and for the confirmation and ordering of the things done by us." The printed editions had "deposition" for "ordering".

Labbeus primas tres subscriptiones nactus in ms. olim Jolyano, nunc capituli Pariensis, quae leguntur tom. IV Concilior. pag. 1781 edit. Venet., sic in omnibus edidit: Valere vos in Domino oro. Baluzius hanc solam primam subscriptionem similiter exhibuit; in duabus autem sequentibus, Valere me in Domino oro, et in margine ex Vat., ora. In caeteris, quas unus Vaticanus codex ad nos transmisit, ejusdem lectionem secutus vulgavit, Valere me ora. Nos Vaticanum in omnibus cohaerentem sequendum putavimus. Non diffitemur tamen probabilius scriptum fuisse, Valere vos in Domino, oro.

Labbe, having found the first three subscriptions in a manuscript formerly Joly's, now of the chapter of Paris, which are read in vol. IV of the Councils, p. 1781, Venice edition, printed them thus in all cases: "I pray that you may fare well in the Lord." Baluze gave this first subscription alone in the same way; but in the two following, "I pray that I may fare well in the Lord", and in the margin, from the Vatican manuscript, "pray". In the rest, which the one Vatican manuscript has handed down to us, he followed its reading and published "Pray that I may fare well". We have thought it right to follow the Vatican manuscript, consistent in all of them. We do not deny, however, that it is more probable that it was written "I pray that you may fare well in the Lord."

So the Vatican manuscript. Wrongly in the printed editions, "for the most God-loving bishop Lucian". For he subscribed in this place in the stead of Cyriacus his metropolitan, and afterwards in his own name.

(b) ‹Valere me ora,› · printed under col 963

The printed editions, but not the manuscript, "most holy and most blessed father".

(c) ‹episcopus civitatis› · printed under col 963, running on under col 964

Ita codex. Baluzius, Ariathiae.

So the manuscript. Baluze, "Ariathia". But from other subscriptions of the same bishop, which are read in the council of Chalcedon, it should be corrected to "Ariarathia".

(d) ‹JOSEPHUS› · printed under col 964

Baluzius, Joseph; dein vero omittit et sanctissime. Codicem Vat. semper sequimur.

Baluze, "Joseph"; and then he omits "and most holy". We always follow the Vatican manuscript.
